On March 25, 2024, Barbara Burghardt passed away peacefully in her sleep, at her home in Little Ferry. She was 76 years old. Born in New York City on December 10, 1947 to Irma and Alfred Kiewe, Barbara was an only child. She is predeceased by her parents and her beloved husband, Philip Burghardt.
Barbara grew up in Wallington NJ. She met Philip at a party in high school and declared immediately “I’m going to marry that man!” Barbara and Philip married on September 15, 1968.
Barbara loved animals. She volunteered for FOCAS, Friends of the County Animal Shelter, for 14 years. In her younger years, Barbara would often rehabilitate injured animals such as squirrels, raccoons and many birds including her family’s beloved crow, Midnight. She particularly loved unusual pets, having given a home to a few parrots, turtles, snakes and even a skunk, as well as several dogs in her later years.
She was an avid garage saler and could never pass up a good sale or even a piece of furniture found in the trash. She loved to repair and repurpose items to help support the animal shelter.
Barbara is survived by her three children, Marc, Eric and Barbi, their spouses, Irina and Damien, 7 grandchildren: Damien, Rebecca, Lauren, Gabriel, Mia, Daniel and Aviel, her sister in law, Frances, and her sweet dog, Odie.
Barbara’s family takes comfort in knowing that she is finally with her beloved husband, Philip, who she missed terribly since his passing in 2016.
