Ellen Devine, age 87 of Bogota, New Jersey passed away peacefully in her sleep, October 6, 2024 at Artis Senior Living of Briarcliff Manor, New York.
Ellen was born at The Coombe Hospital in County Dublin, Ireland on December 5, 1936. Ellen grew up in Newtownforbes, County Longford, Ireland where she met her husband Gerry Devine, Lettergunnell, County Longford, Ireland before emigrating to Bronx, New York in 1965.
Ellen and Gerry were married at the Church of St. Raymond, Bronx, New York where they lived before moving to Bogota, New Jersey and raising a family. They were married for over 53 years.
Devoted mother of Mary Catherine and her husband, Jeremy, Michael Patrick and his wife Anne, Gerard Francis and Sean Kevin. Loving grandmother of Patrick, Christopher, Paige, Phoebe, Zoe, Katherine and Norah.
Ellen was a long time teacher’s aide at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran School and worked at the St. Joseph’s after school program in Bogota.
Ellen was a dedicated and passionate member of the Bergen Irish Association, Bergen Irish Ladies Auxiliary and St. Joseph’s Gaelic Football Club where she spent many of her days, nights and years socializing, Sunday afternoon Ceili dancing and proudly promoting Irish culture in New Jersey.
She also traveled with the American Children’s Pilgrimage Group who brought handicapped children on a yearly pilgrimage to Lourdes, France during Easter week.
Ellen’s contributions to the community were noted when she was recognized as the Bergen Irish Association Person of the Year in 1993 and when the Borough of Bogota declared March 15, 2010 as Ellen Devine Day.
Those who knew Ellen will remember her smile, her laugh and her ability to kindly “tell it like it is”. Her keen wit, laughter, and ability to always have fun will be very much missed.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10am, Saturday, October 12, 2024 at St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church in Bogota, New Jersey.
Following Mass, Ellen will be laid to rest at Maryrest Cemetery and Mausoleum in Mahwah, New Jersey.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to support the National Alzheimer’s Association.
