On Wednesday, January 27, 2021 John F Hughes, 89, father of seven, peacefully passed away surrounded by his children.
John was preceded in death by his wife of sixty years, Agnes. He was also predeceased by his parents and brothers Joseph, Hubert, Thomas, James, Larry, and Frank as well as his sisters Patricia and Therese. He is survived by his seven children, 19 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren as well as his sisters Mary and Gladys.
John was born March 10, 1931 in Brooklyn NY to Joseph and Gladys Hughes, the third of eleven children. He grew up in Ridgefield Park and graduated from Holy Trinity High School in Hackensack in 1949. On October 2nd 1954 he married Agnes Hoar of Bogota. He had a long career as a civil engineer with Bergen County and retired in 1997. Together Agnes and John raised 7 children; Rita Anne Hart(Matty) of Bogota, Kathy Moreland(the late Tom) of Yorktown, VA, Jack Hughes(Joan) of Smithtown NY, Eileen Hayden(Curtis) of Manhattan KS, Marie Varon(Tony) of Pembroke Pines FL, Chris Hughes(Marleny) of Bergenfield NJ and Colleen Hughes of Lincoln Park NJ.
John was a devoted family man and supported his children and grandchildren in all of their pursuits. He was a devout Catholic and a loyal parishioner of St. Joseph’s in Bogota. He would lend a hand in all aspects of the faith community as well as CYO activities. In their later years, John and Agnes enjoyed traveling and visited their children in Japan, Spain, Colombia and various parts of the US. He was an avid baseball fan and loved his Yankees.
Visiting at Petrik Funeral Home, 140 Palisade Ave. Bogota on Friday from 4 to 8pm. A Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday at St. Francis Church in Ridgefield Park NJ at 9:30am.
