Kathleen E. Carr, age 95, passed away on April 27, 2018 at the Hackensack University Medical Center. She was born on January 17, 1923 in Brooklyn, New York, the daughter of Susan Kelly and Ed Smyth. She married James J. Carr on October 4, 1947. James preceded Kay in death on December 19, 1992 after a loving marriage of 46 years. Kay's life centered around her family, her faith and her community. She is the mother of ten children and has fourteen grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. Kay expressed her strong Christian faith through decades of service to St. Joseph's Church in Bogota, acting as President of both the Parish Counsel and the Altar and Scapular Society. For 33 years, she was a Eucharistic Minister at Hackensack University Medical Center, where she administered communion every Sunday. Kay's dedication to the community in her hometown of Bogota included many years of service through the Library Board, Senior Citizen Advisory Board, Women's Club and English as a Second Language program. Her commitment was recognized in 1998 when Bogota's VFW named her Citizen of the Year. Kay is a graduate of St. John's University and Jersey City State University. She started her career as a teacher at St. Joseph's Academy and eventually became Deputy Director of Passaic County's Special Education program, one of the largest such programs in the country.
She is survived by her children; Jean (Philip) Pappas, Thomas (Barbara) Carr, Kathleen Carr, Kevin (Susan) Carr, Dennis (Gayle) Carr, John (Rocio) Carr, Elizabeth (Walter) Mitze, William (Diane) Carr, her daughter-in-law Regina Carr; 14 loving grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and sister-in-law Barbara Smyth. In addition to her husband, Kay was preceded in death by her daughter Mary, son James Jr. and brother John.The family will greet friends from 2:00 - 4:00 and 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 29 at Petrik Funeral Home, 140 Palisade Ave, Bogota. The Funeral Mass will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, April 30, 2018 at St. Joseph's RC Church, 115 Fort Lee Rd, Bogota. Burial will be at George Washington Memorial Park, Paramus.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to either St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or Tomorrows Children's Fund.
